Changelog: what's new in Reading Rewind

Updated

New features and visible fixes in Reading Rewind, newest first. Behind-the-scenes work isn't listed.

October 2026

  • Today is the new home after you sign in. It shows the newest save that's ready to read, the rest of your reading list, tabs sent from your browsers, what needs tidying, and your sources.
  • Open Saves is now Read Later, and Open Tabs is now Tabs. The sidebar reads Today, Read Later, Tabs, Bookmarks (with each source under it), Cleanup Center and Settings.
  • Read Later, Tabs and Bookmarks share one reading desk: the list on the left, the reader on the right. In the app, Bookmarks replaces the old Explorer and keeps a folder column beside the list.
  • Reader views now make themselves. Open a save, tab or bookmark without a stored copy and Reading Rewind tries once to make one. If that fails, you get the live page or Open Original. Rows without a stored copy say "link only".
  • The Reader/Live switch shows for every stored copy, in all three lists. If a site won't be shown inside Reading Rewind, Live says so and offers Open Original.
  • The text-size buttons in the reader now change the size of the article text.
  • Five colour themes: Sepia, Slate, Ink, Dusk and High Contrast. Pick one in Settings > Appearance or from the account menu.
  • Settings is one page, with Profile, Security, Appearance and Sync tabs.
  • Importing a bookmarks file no longer replaces your library. Each file becomes its own source, such as "HTML Import (bookmarks.html)", and importing a file with the same name again replaces only that source.
  • In Settings > Sync you can disconnect a browser and keep its bookmarks, delete a source along with its bookmarks and folders, and delete Unlinked Bookmarks that no source links to.
  • Pairing links work once, and the Sync page shows a fresh one after a browser connects. The link starts on the browser you're using.
  • The Cleanup Center has a tab for each queue: Folders, Deleted in Browser, Duplicate URLs, Untagged Bookmarks, Stale Tabs and Tags. Source chips narrow a queue, and every queue has a bulk bar with Select All on Page, Select All and Delete Permanently.
  • List filters are dropdowns. In Bookmarks, the status filter combines with Ready to Read, and a Tags picker shows items with any of the tags you choose.
  • Faster imports and sync. In our tests, 5,000 bookmarks import in under a second instead of 7.5, re-syncing a large browser library takes about 4 seconds instead of nearly two minutes, and Bookmarks opens 2 to 3 times faster.
  • Changing your password signs you out on your other devices, and changing your email address sends a new confirmation email.
  • Fixes: links that differ only in upper and lower case no longer overwrite each other, and choosing an item on a phone scrolls the reader back to the top.
  • Reading Rewind is now a read-later app first. The site leads with saving and reading articles, bookmark sync is the bonus, and the FAQ says plainly what's missing: no mobile app, highlights, offline reading, or Pocket import.
  • Chrome is now the recommended browser. The Firefox extension is labeled beta, with a warning that Firefox removes it on every restart until Mozilla signs it.
  • New pages: About, Privacy policy, Terms of service, Help, Guides, a Pocket alternative comparison, and this changelog.
  • New free tools: the Pocket export viewer turns a Pocket export into a bookmarks.html file, the bookmark dead-link checker finds bookmarks whose sites no longer respond, and the duplicate bookmark remover merges files and drops repeats. All three run in your browser.
  • New accounts now confirm their email address before opening the app. Existing accounts that haven't confirmed are asked to once.
  • The extension now tells Reading Rewind which browser it's in when you connect it, so a Firefox source is never filed as Chrome. Sources you don't name are called Chrome 1, Chrome 2, Firefox 1 and so on. Edge is no longer offered: Chrome and Firefox are the supported browsers.
  • The extension panel has clearer headings, and readable button text in dark mode.
  • Links to Reading Rewind now show a preview image when shared.
  • The emerald accent now runs through the whole app, replacing the leftover blue.
  • Home page fixes: the navigation fits on one line on phones with Log in visible, and two-column layouts are back on desktop.

September 2026

  • One-click saving: the toolbar button saves the current page straight to Open Saves, a new reading list in your library, with an optional tag.
  • Saving a page that's already in Open Saves moves it back to the top instead of adding it twice.
  • Clearer feedback in the extension while a page saves, and the save screen stays visible until it's done.
  • Switch between the stored reader copy and the live page from the reader view.
  • Quick tag controls on each item in your library.
  • Filtering by several tags now shows items with any of them, and your tag filters survive the back button.
  • Rename and delete tags in the Cleanup Center.
  • Reconnect a browser to its previous source, or start a separate one, without losing the links you saved before.
  • Delete items right in the explorer, and open tabs stay visible there.
  • A new solid emerald logo, now also the extension icon.
  • Spam protection on the sign-up form.

August 2026

  • Save the page you're on from the extension's panel. The reader copy is prepared in the background.
  • A new library list with site icons, a full-width layout, and a built-in reader.
  • Set the reader text size in Appearance settings. It's remembered in your browser.
  • Filter your library to items that already have a reader copy.
  • Choose an auto reader-view tag in Settings, and anything with that tag gets a reader copy automatically, checked every six hours.
  • Adding a link by hand: the name is optional and fetched for you, the current folder is preselected, and you can edit links afterwards.
  • Words in [square brackets] at the start or end of a bookmark title become tags.
  • A lighter dark mode.
  • A preview or reader copy that fails to load no longer breaks the page, and the Open link always works.
  • Fixes: synced bookmark tags show in the explorer, deleting a folder in the Cleanup Center no longer errors, deleting bookmarks and cleanup items is smoother, and pagination lines up.

June 2026

  • A security and reliability pass: safer fetching of saved pages, and fixes for bookmark sync edge cases.

May 2026

  • Add a link by hand from your library with Add Link.
  • A redesigned home page in light and dark themes.

April 2026

  • The first version: import a browser's bookmarks.html file, read saved pages in a reader view, and browse any bookmarks.html in the no-account bookmark explorer.
  • A browser extension for Chrome and Firefox that syncs your bookmarks, connected with a pairing link from Sync Settings.
  • Each browser syncs as its own source, and you can send all your open tabs to your library.
  • Filter your library by source, and see when each browser last synced.
  • The Cleanup Center: find duplicates, untagged links, stale tabs, and bookmarks deleted in the browser, then tidy them in batches.
  • Select many items at once to tag or delete them.
  • The extension asks for fewer browser permissions.
  • The app gets its name, Reading Rewind, and its first logo.
  • Large libraries load faster in the explorer.
  • Fixes for bulk tagging, clearing a source, bookmark dates, and deleting synced tabs.
