Terms of service

Updated

These terms apply when you use Reading Rewind: the website at readingrewind.com, the web app, and the browser extension. Reading Rewind is run by the independent developer of Reading Rewind ("we", "us"). By creating an account or using Reading Rewind, you agree to these terms. Our privacy policy explains how we handle your data.

Who can use Reading Rewind

  • You must be at least 16 years old.
  • Your account is for you. Do not share it, and do not create accounts for other people without their permission.
  • You may not use Reading Rewind if we have closed your account for breaking these terms, unless we agree otherwise.

Your account

  • Use a real email address that you can receive mail at. We use it to help you get back into your account.
  • Keep your password safe. We recommend turning on two-factor authentication in Settings.
  • You are responsible for what happens in your account. If you think someone else has access to it, change your password straight away.
  • You can delete your account at any time in Settings.

Acceptable use

When you save a page, our server fetches it to make a reader copy. Please use this, and the rest of Reading Rewind, fairly. Do not:

  • use Reading Rewind to break the law, or to store or share illegal content;
  • use the page fetcher to reach addresses you are not allowed to access, to attack or overload websites, or to collect pages in bulk;
  • scrape, crawl, or overload Reading Rewind, or access it by automated means other than the website, the app, and our extension;
  • try to get into other people's accounts, or test, probe, or get around our security or rate limits;
  • resell Reading Rewind or offer it to others as part of your own service.

Your content

  • What you save stays yours. Your links, titles, folders, and tags belong to you. We do not claim ownership of them.
  • What we may do with it. You allow us to store, copy, and process your content only as far as we need to run Reading Rewind for you. For example, we fetch the pages you save, make reader copies, and show them back to you. This permission ends when you delete the content or your account. Shared reader copies are the exception, as the privacy policy explains.
  • Reader copies are for your personal use. A reader copy is a copy of someone else's work, and it still belongs to its author or publisher. Read it yourself. Do not republish or redistribute it.
  • Save only what you may access. Do not use Reading Rewind to get around paywalls or other access controls.
  • We may remove content or reader copies that break these terms or the law.

The browser extension

  • The extension is a direct download from readingrewind.com. It is not listed in the Chrome Web Store or on Firefox Add-ons.
  • Chrome is recommended. You load the download in Chrome as a local extension.
  • Firefox is in beta. The Firefox build is not signed by Mozilla yet, so Firefox runs it as a temporary add-on loaded from about:debugging. Firefox removes it every time it restarts, and you need to load it again and reconnect it. Your saves and synced bookmarks stay in your account.
  • Because it is not installed from a store, the extension does not update itself. Download new versions from readingrewind.com, and only from there.
  • The privacy policy lists the extension's permissions and exactly what it sends.

The service is provided as is

Reading Rewind is built and run by one developer. We work to keep it running and your saves safe, but we provide it "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind. We do not promise that it will always be available or free of errors, or that every page can be turned into a reader copy. Reader copies can be incomplete or differ from the original page. Keep your own copy of anything you cannot afford to lose.

Changes to the service

  • We may add, change, or remove features. We may also pause the service for maintenance.

Pricing

  • Reading Rewind is free to use today. You do not need a credit card.
  • We may add paid features in the future.

Suspension and closing accounts

  • You can stop using Reading Rewind and delete your account at any time.
  • We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, harms the service or other people, or when the law requires it. Where it is reasonable, we will tell you first and explain why.

Limitation of liability

As far as the law allows:

  • we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for lost data, lost profits, or lost opportunities;
  • our total liability for any claim about Reading Rewind is limited to the amount you paid us for it in the 12 months before the claim.

Nothing in these terms limits liability that the law does not allow us to limit, or takes away rights you have as a consumer under the law where you live.

Changes to these terms

When we change these terms, we update this page and the date at the top. If a change is significant, we will tell account holders by email or in the app before it takes effect. If you keep using Reading Rewind after a change takes effect, the new terms apply. If you do not agree with them, you can delete your account.
